The overall setting for how variants present themselves in the webshop is set in Umbraco under the section "Variant display options":

The overall setting can be overrule by individual settings on a specific Parent/Main variant in the Product Information Management (PIM) system. See settings below as well as additional options to present variants, such as displayed in: columns, productlist, selectboxes, images.
